R200m Relief Fund Progress Update

In total, 4000 tourism businesses countrywide received the tourism relief funding of R50 000. In the Eastern Cape, 457 of the 732 applicants received this funding. The distribution of these businesses is summarised as follows.

District/Metro Number
Amathole District 23
Alfred Nzo District 45
Buffalo City Metro 102
Chris Hani District 27
Joe Gqabi District 12
Nelson Mandela Bay Metro 103
OR Tambo District 61
Sarah Baartman District 84
Total 457

Some EC applicants who were compliant couldn’t received the funding due to its depletion and had a second chance through ECPTA’s application to the Department of Economic Development Environment Affairs and Tourism for further tourism relief funding to bridge this gap. Continuous empowerment support will be provided to those who did not meet the set criteria. Such support will include training on business management, the legal requirements for each subsector (including compliance with SARS and the Department of Labour), and grading support.

Progress on the Freelance Tourist Guide Fund

A total of 182 freelance tourist guides from the Eastern Cape have been paid a monthly stipend of R1500 to date. There is continuous verification by the Department of Tourism and the Department of Labour as many guides have claimed that they have been contributing to the UIF but have not successfully claimed or have not received any payments from the Department of Labour. The ECPTA is following up on the tourist guides that have not redeemed their vouchers for July and August. The issue of some tourist guides receiving insufficient amounts was raised and rectified by the Department.
