ABOUT THE RESERVE
The Kap River Nature Reserve is approximately 670ha in extent. It is managed by Ndlambe Municipality; the
local municipality in Port Alfred. Situated about 26 kms east from Port Alfred, the Reserve is bounded to the
South by the Indian Ocean, to the East by the Great Fish River and to the West by the Kap River.
It boasts an abundance of wildlife with giraffe being its flagship species. You will also be able to see zebra,
impala, red hartebeest, warthog, common reedbuck, bushbuck, nyala, waterbuck, common and blue duiker. At
night you may also be lucky enough to spot aardvark, bushpig, spring hares and lynx.
It is also a wonderful place to do some birdwatching with over 200 recorded bird species in the reserve.
PICNIC AND BRAAI FACILITIES
There is a designated picnic spot for our day visitors situated close to the convergence of the Kap and Fish
Rivers. Come relax and unwind in the tranquillity of nature and have a family meal under shady trees. The site
has easy access to hiking trails and the canoes and has a huge grassy lawn ensuring that there’s lots to do for
everyone.
NATURE TRAIL
This reserve lends itself to having a nature experience. With no actual access roads to speak of except the
main road running through it, it is the ideal location to climb out of the car and get close to nature by hiking
through it. A Nature Trail in the form of a large loop about 7 kms long, with several return routes gives easy
access to the Kap River and Fish River flood plains. An abundance of fauna and flora can be seen along this
route.
