EXPERIENCE THE EASTERN CAPE IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF NELSON MANDELA

The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA), together with the Nelson Mandela Museum and Vodacom, hosted a group of influencers on a weekend trip to showcase some of the places that shaped Madiba’s life.

The tour started in Qunu at the Nelson Mandela Youth and Heritage Centre. This museum shares the story of Mandela’s early life through pictures, displays, and personal items. Visitors get to learn about the “young boy” who would one day become a global icon.

Right next to the museum is a cosy accommodation space where guests can stay and enjoy beautiful views of the hills where Mandela once played and herded cattle. Waking up in this peaceful setting is like stepping back in time.

In Mthatha, the Nelson Mandela Museum features life-size statues showing important moments in Mandela’s life from his childhood to his presidency. It serves as a powerful reminder of his journey and lasting legacy.

No visit would be complete without a taste of local flavours. Zimnandi Eatery in Mthatha serves traditional Eastern Cape dishes with a modern twist, offering visitors a genuine taste of the province’s rich culinary heritage.

For those seeking an even deeper connection, the Qunu Homestay Experience offers visitors the opportunity to stay with local families, savour traditional meals, and share stories around the fire, just as Mandela did in his youth.

The trip ended at the famous Qunu Sliding Rock, a smooth stone where young Mandela used to slide for fun. It’s a simple yet special place, filled with joy and childhood memories.
