Amapondo Backpacker Lodge

Located in Port St Johns

Amapondo is so distinctive, its hard to match. From the moment you walk in and meet their friendly pet donkey who even hangs around the bar, you’ll know that this place is special. Nestled on a hill amidst a tropical rain forest, head down to the only real beach in town to sun-bathe, and take a plunge in the clear warm waters of the deep natural rock pools. Amapondo boasts unbeatable ocean views, an Ala Carte menu with scrumptious food , a vibey atmosphere and buzzing bar, quirky African-themed rooms, and luxurious private self-catering cottages each with their own unique design and style. These Cottages have incredible views, comfort, and unique quirky designs at a price that you’ll find hard to match. Turtle Cove has arguably the best view in the Wild Coast right from out of a hot upstairs bubble bath, whilst the Crystal House, with its complete glass front, offers classic panoramic views.
Whether you want a quiet relaxing break in your own piece of paradise, a base from where you can explore the natural beauty of the area, an adventure on one of their many tours, close interactions with locals, genuine cultural experiences, yoga lessons, a deep tissue massage, or a thumping all-out party – Amapondo has it all! The staff and owners go out their way to respect and accommodate all tastes and cater for all needs. Talking of catering Amapondo has some of the best grub in town – offering fusions of African and even Asian influences – don’t miss the dinner specials!
Stunning beaches right across from Amapondo,  Bululo Waterfall is an exciting hike directly from their back gate (don’t chicken out of the 11m jump), Isinuka sulphur mud caves are muddy fun, the old air-strip runway (where Leonardo DiCaprio ‘died’ in Blood Diamond) is magical at sunset especially with an icy-cold sundowner. And there’s more – Amapondo also arranges ocean safaris with whale and dolphin watching, scuba diving, booze cruises up the Umzimvubu River, horse riding, canoeing, quad biking, and trips to the awe-inspiring 144m Magwa Waterfall that will seriously blow your mind.
Situated in the Jewel of the Wild Coast, Port St Johns is a buzzing town with shops, restaurants, banks, and loads of quirky folk.
If you’ve never visited Amapondo, you gotta go.
