The Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), under the leadership of MEC Nonkqubela Pieters, hosted a strategic roundtable to explore tourism’s role in driving inclusive economic growth within the Eastern Cape.
Premier Oscar Mabuyane, delivering the keynote address, emphasised balanced socio-economic development and envisioned the province becoming an economic powerhouse, supported by thriving industrial and tourism hubs. He highlighted tourism’s potential as a catalyst for job creation, sustainable development, and investment attraction.
Roundtable discussions placed particular emphasis on rural and township tourism, advocating for economic inclusion of historically marginalised communities. Expanding marine tourism, including coastal activities and cruise tourism, was also identified as a priority area, alongside targeted infrastructure investments to boost visitor experiences. MEC Pieters underlined the importance of intentional transformation, ensuring growth benefits all residents equally.
