ECPTA Enhances Experience for Cruise Liner Passengers in Gqeberha

The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA), in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), Ports Authority, and local municipalities, has taken significant steps to ensure a seamless and enriching experience for cruise liner passengers visiting Gqeberha.

This collaborative initiative focuses on compliance checks for cruise liners, aiming to provide passengers with a top-notch experience during their visit to the Eastern Cape. The efforts are designed to enable guests to enjoy a range of tourism experiences, from exploring Gqeberha’s pristine beaches to immersing themselves in its rich cultural heritage.

Fezeka Mlungu, Senior Manager of Tourism Development at ECPTA, emphasised the joint commitment to safety and high-quality service. “We are dedicated to ensuring that passengers safely explore local attractions, maintaining our region’s high standards of hospitality and service,” Mlungu stated.

The initiative also addresses the rise in illegal tourist guides. “Through industry engagement and Tourist Guiding compliance checks in Gqeberha, we are tackling the challenge of unauthorised guides,” Mlungu explained, underscoring the importance of providing visitors with a memorable and fulfilling experience.

Ernie Bergins, a local tour operator, highlighted the risks associated with illegal guiding, particularly in the harbour area during cruise liner arrivals. “These unauthorised guides not only pose a reputational risk but also jeopardise tourist safety by charging exorbitant fees for transportation,” Bergins noted. Thanks to the initiative, spot checks at the harbour have exposed many such illegal activities.

The collaborative efforts of ECPTA, SAPS, Ports Authority, and municipalities have been pivotal in enhancing security and maintaining order, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for both visitors and residents. Their presence reinforces a sense of confidence and tranquillity, encouraging tourists to explore the city’s offerings fully.

As Gqeberha continues to welcome cruise liner passengers, these concerted efforts are vital in establishing the city as a premier tourist destination. “Together with our partners, we are committed to creating lasting memories for our visitors and proudly showcasing the beauty and diversity of Gqeberha,” Mlungu concluded.
