ECPTA HOSTS HIGH-LEVEL TREASURY AND DEDEAT OFFICIALS

In a strategic move to highlight the critical funding needs of the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA), CEO Vuyani Dayimani recently hosted a high-level delegation of executives from the National and Provincial Treasury and the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs, and Tourism (DEDEAT) at the Great Fish Nature Reserve.

The visit aimed to provide these key decision-makers with firsthand experience and an understanding of the operational realities and challenges ECPTA faces in managing and conserving the province’s natural reserves.

Upon arrival, the delegation was given a comprehensive tour of the Great Fish Nature Reserve, showcasing the diverse flora and fauna, conservation projects, and ecotourism initiatives that ECPTA spearheads.

The visit also provided an opportunity to openly discuss the significant challenges faced by ECPTA. ECPTA Commercialisation Manager, Bulelani Silangwe outlined the pressing issues of underfunding, infrastructure degradation, and limited resources for conservation efforts.

He explained that while the agency has made remarkable strides, the current funding levels from both national and provincial departments are insufficient to address all operational and strategic needs.

“Despite persistent challenges threatening our ability to maintain and expand our conservation efforts, the entity has devised innovative ways to ensure that the work continues,” Silangwe emphasised.
