ECPTA JOINS PROVINCIAL CALL TO COMBAT PLASTIC POLLUTION

The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) joined the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs, and Tourism (DEDEAT) and other stakeholders in commemorating Provincial Environmental Day on 4 June 2025 in Gatyana, Mbhashe Local Municipality.

Themed around combating plastic pollution, the event served as a critical platform to reaffirm the province’s commitment to safeguarding its rich natural heritage and promoting sustainable tourism practices.

Delivering the keynote address, MEC for DEDEAT, Nonkqubela Pieters, raised serious concerns about the escalating threat of plastic pollution to the Eastern Cape’s environment, tourism economy, and public health.

“Our coastlines, landscapes, and biodiversity are not only a source of pride but also vital to our tourism sector and local livelihoods. Yet, these treasures are under threat,” said MEC Pieters.

As part of the government’s ongoing interventions, MEC Pieters highlighted notable initiatives, including an R3.86 million investment by DEDEAT into a waste recycling project within Mbhashe Local Municipality, which created 100 job opportunities, benefiting 63 women and 46 youth.
