In an era where safety and security are paramount for the tourism industry’s growth, the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) took a proactive stance by organising victim support workshops in Mthatha and Gqeberha. These workshops were meticulously designed to equip tourism stakeholders with essential skills and knowledge to manage crises effectively, ensuring the Eastern Cape remains a safe and welcoming destination for all visitors.
Fezeka Mlungu, ECPTA’s Senior Manager: Tourism Development, emphasised the workshops’ significance, which served as collaborative forums for sharing best practices in crisis management, enhancing safety protocols, and fostering a unified approach to tourism security. The sessions facilitated a dialogue between hospitality providers, tour operators, community representatives, and law enforcement agencies, creating a cohesive network of stakeholders committed to safeguarding the region’s tourism appeal.
The impact of these workshops extends beyond immediate crisis response; they are a cornerstone in building a resilient and sustainable tourism ecosystem in the Eastern Cape. By fostering a culture of preparedness and collaboration, ECPTA, with stakeholders like the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA), Tourism Associations, South African Police Services (SAPS) and more, sets a new standard in tourism safety, ensuring every visitor’s experience is memorable and secure.
