YOUTH MONTH EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

From Interns to permanent employment at ECPTA

As South Africa celebrates Youth Month, the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) reflects on the value of creating opportunities for young professionals to grow within the organisation. Two inspiring examples of this are Nande Ntshebe and Sinawo Hondwana, young individuals who began their journeys as interns and have since secured permanent positions, proving the impact of mentorship and resilience.

Ntshebe, from King William’s Town, joined ECPTA in 2023 as an intern in the Destination Development Unit. Known for her positive energy and passion for community upliftment, she quickly embraced the organisation’s mission. “I came here eager to learn and was fortunate to have mentors who believed in me,” she said. Today, as an Admin Clerk, she plays a vital role in supporting tourism development projects that uplift local communities. For Ntshebe, Youth Month serves as a reminder of the responsibility young people have in shaping an inclusive and progressive future.

Hondwana, born in Lady Frere, started as a Finance intern in 2022. A calm and dependable presence in the workplace, he credits his internship with giving him practical experience and confidence. “It taught me professionalism, discipline, and the value of consistency,” he reflected. Now permanently employed as a Procurement Officer, he ensures services and resources are acquired in line with policies and regulations. Hondwana views Youth Month as a time to honour those who fought for change and to act consciously in building a better future.

Their journeys reflect ECPTA’s commitment to investing in young talent and creating pathways for growth within the tourism and conservation sectors. This Youth Month, we celebrate not only their achievements but also the potential of all young people to drive positive change in the Eastern Cape.
