In this issue, we celebrate tourism frontline product owner and guide Dawid de Wet, who has been an inspiration and storyteller to hundreds of visitors over the years. Lockdown inspired Dawid to pen and record his stories and make them available online to continue to inspire future visitors during this time. Here is his story:
TOERBOER is an inbound tour operator that focuses on small-group, bespoke and guided tours through Southern Africa. Based in Graaff-Reinet, we have three self-catering units in a historic building which serves as a base from which visitors are guided on exceptional experiences in the area.
Since the beginning of February, it was clear that we would not be receiving any enquiries for a long time as the Covid-19 pandemic was already in full swing in Europe. I used the time to start writing up all my old travel stories based on the journals I kept over the years. Amongst my references were the daily letters I wrote to my son at home while I was away on a tour in 2019. I turned these stories into a podcast series which I recently launched. The podcast is in Afrikaans and is called: Kampvuurstories vir jong reisigers – deur Toerboer. I release one podcast per week. My ultimate goal is to translate my letters and podcasts into different South African languages as well as some European languages.
During these trying times, it is a blessing to spend time with my family, but also to be able to look back at twenty years of memories and stories and share them with the world.
