Oviston Nature Reserve Outreach Highlights Fossil Heritage

Oviston Nature Reserve hosted an educational outreach session led by the Evolutionary Studies Institute from the University of the Witwatersrand, showcasing the globally significant fossil heritage of the Karoo Basin. Learners from Simphiwe Khethwa Secondary School were introduced to the Permian Triassic extinction event, one of the most important moments in Earth’s evolutionary history, and explored geological layers that preserve evidence of ancient life.

The group engaged with scientific exhibits including a restored Lystrosaurus skull discovered within the reserve, giving learners a rare, hands-on connection to the province’s deep-time history. The outreach team also donated educational materials and a life sized Lystrosaurus model to strengthen the reserve’s interpretive displays. This initiative supports ECPTA’s ongoing efforts to promote fossil based tourism, inspire young scientists and expand access to environmental education in rural communities.
