Silaka Nature Reserve celebrated World Water Day with educational and engaging activities at Hlamvana Junior Secondary School on 25 April 2024. The event, which coincided with a comprehensive Career Expo, was specially designed for Grade 8 and Grade 9 students and unemployed graduates, highlighting the critical importance of water conservation and offering valuable career insights.
Silaka Nature Reserve Manager, Nonkazimlo, said they recognise the significance of safeguarding their water resources, particularly within their wetlands, oceans, and rivers.
“This year’s celebration focused on several key areas, including water conservation and safety strategies, the implications of water scarcity, and the correlation with climate change,” said Baca.
Experts shared practical methods to conserve water daily, emphasising the importance of sustainable practices to ensure a steady clean water supply for future generations. Presentations highlighted the severe impacts of water scarcity on communities and ecosystems, stressing the urgent need for collective action to address this global challenge.
Alongside the World Water Day activities, the Career Expo provided an invaluable platform for students and unemployed graduates to explore potential career paths and employment opportunities. The expo focused on equipping attendees with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about their futures.
Baca said, “Key objectives included providing information for career decision-making, guidance on tertiary education applications, and showcasing a range of opportunities available to students after completing Grade 12, including vocational training, internships, and employment prospects.”
