In collaboration with Ndlambe Local Municipality and the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency’s Thomas Baines Provincial Nature Reserve hosted a successful Kowie River Cleanup Campaign in Port Alfred. This initiative united community members, environmental advocates, and local stakeholders with a shared vision of preserving the region’s natural beauty.
The campaign’s primary goal was to instill a sense of environmental responsibility within the local community by encouraging positive behavioural changes. The event sought to challenge and change attitudes towards waste management, focusing on reducing littering and illegal dumping. Participants were educated on sustainable waste disposal practices and the significant impact of pollution on the health of the Kowie River and surrounding ecosystems.
Beyond the cleanup effort, the campaign served as a platform to promote cleaner, greener, and safer neighbourhoods. It highlighted communities’ collective responsibility to maintain the integrity of their environment, ensuring a higher quality of life for current and future generations.
