UMTIZA NATURE RESERVE, A HIDDEN GEM FOR HIKING ENTHUSIASTS

The Eastern Cape’s natural heritage continues to shine, with Umtiza Nature Reserve offering one of the province’s most scenic hiking destinations. A hiking enthusiast, Guy Fowler and his friends explored the popular Samango and Tree Dassie Trails.

Situated along Buffalo Pass near East London, Umtiza Nature Reserve spans 186 hectares of protected forest. Managed by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA), the reserve forms part of the Buffalo River Gorge and plays a vital role in conserving biodiversity and supporting wildlife movement in the region.

Home to species such as the blue duiker, samango monkey, and a variety of indigenous birds, Umtiza is both a haven for nature lovers and a key contributor to the province’s eco-tourism offering. Its trails and natural beauty continue to attract hikers, birdwatchers, and outdoor enthusiasts, offering a tranquil escape just minutes from the city.
