ECPTA CELEBRATES MEN’S DAY

Themed “Healthy Men, Healthy World”, the Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency (ECPTA) celebrated its Men’s Day on the 25th of November 2023 at Drifters Racetrack Theme Park, Cambridge.

This day which is observed around the world provides an opportunity to promote discussions and actions that support men’s physical and mental health, encourage positive role models, and advocate for a more inclusive society.

ECPTA Wellness Officer, Aphindiwe Fodo, said in a world where mental health awareness is gaining momentum, addressing the often-overlooked issue of suicide is crucial. The ECPTA has taken a proactive step by hosting a Men’s Day with a specific focus on suicide prevention.

“This event aims to break the silence surrounding mental health challenges faced by men, encouraging open conversations and fostering a supportive community,” said Fodo.

Fodo added that societal expectations and stereotypes have perpetuated the notion that men should be strong, stoic, and impervious to emotional struggles. Unfortunately, this stereotype often leads to the suppression of feelings and a hesitancy to seek help. This event seeks to challenge this stigma, providing a platform for men to share their experiences and feelings without judgment.

The ECPTA Wellness office arranged a range of activities that reinforces teamwork and other fun activities such as go-karting and quad biking.

According to the East London Coast Field Ranger, Makhi Mbodamo, this is a commendable initiative by the Agency in the ongoing effort to encourage men to seek help when they need it.

“Platforms like these provide us an opportunity to have open conversations, share personal stories, and offer practical resources. This event contributed to a healthier and more supportive community,” said Mbodamo.

Men’s Day is celebrated in over 60 countries around the world in appreciation of the positive contribution men make to the world, their families and communities. The official date for International Men’s Day this year was 19 November.
