ECPTA HOSTS THRILLING KAYAKING COMPETITION

The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) in partnership with OR Tambo District Municipality and Nyandeni Local Municipality hosted an exciting kayaking competition at Mdumbi Location on the 16th of September 2023.

The aim of this kayaking competition was to promote kayaking as a sporting activity among youth. Furthermore, it served as a  platform for kayakers to showcase their skills with the hope of competing at  regional, national and international levels. This competition can take place in different types of water bodies, such as rivers and lakes.

According to ECPTA Regional Tourism Development Manager, Nomonde Makaula, these competitors were trained by ECPTA and are now qualified and registered Kayak Guides.

“This was done to address issues of transformation whilst creating opportunities for youth in the Wild Coast. They are now able to make a living out of this. We want to see them competing in larger kayaking competitions because they have skills and are qualified to do so,” said Makaula.

The competition attracted kayaking enthusiasts from OR Tambo and Mbashe with various categories, including sprint races and long-distance challenges. There was something for kayakers of all skill levels.

“We can look forward to a future where more people appreciate and protect the natural wonders of this stunning corner of the country. Whether you’re an experienced kayaker or simply someone who enjoys the beauty of unspoiled landscapes, this area has something truly special to offer,” said Makaula.

Competitors were educated about responsible kayaking practices, including respecting wildlife and minimizing waste. Participants were encouraged to leave no trace and actively participate in beach clean-ups before and after the competition.

Lwandiso Notshana from Tshani location who is also a coach said back in 2010 there was a a non-Governmental Organisation (NGO)  from America looking for entrepreneurs to sponsor, the majority of people chose farming and agriculture and he opted for kayaking, and they gave him three kayaks.

“We are also grateful to ECPTA as they also donated kayaks and for equipping us with the necessary skills in order to become qualified and registered kayakers,” said Notshana.

Winners were awarded with trophies, medals, and accommodation vouchers to visit some of the ECPTA Nature Reserves.
