ECPTA SUPPORTS RHINO CONSERVATION

126 adventure seekers and nature enthusiastic took part in a charity hike recently organised by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) at Island Nature Reserve on the 4th of November 2023.  The proceeds from this event were earmarked for a noble cause – the protection of rhinos in the Eastern Cape.

The hike was not only about experiencing the marvels of nature but also about making a tangible difference in preserving it. All proceeds from the hike were dedicated to the protection of rhinos in the Eastern Cape as rhino poaching remains a pressing issue,

ECPTA Brand Manager, Bongani Matshisi said, “the funds raised from this event will support various initiatives, including raising awareness for the importance of Rhino Conservation and to promote Island Nature Reserve as an ideal hiking and picnicking reserve.”

According to the Island Nature Reserve Manager, Hosia Maibelo, the hike was a huge success as they did not anticipate such a huge turnout out.

“This trail allows hikers to be spoiled with vantage points with coastal views, Yellow Wood, Hard Pear, White Pear and Milkwood trees, and animals such as vervet monkeys, duikers and bushbucks can be seen along the trails, on a lucky day, porcupines, bushpigs and caracal can also be seen,” said Maibelo.

Member of Voetsac hiking club, Vincent Naiv, who was impressed by hospitality from Island Nature Reserve and the cleanliness of the reserve said “as hikers we received excellent treatment, the trail is easily accessible and accommodate both young and old people as well as children. It’s nice to see people enjoy the unspoiled beauty in our city.”
