Tourism trends indicate that safety and security matters are of utmost importance and critical for a tourist deciding on a particular destination. The success and failure of a Tourist destination depend on being able to provide, a safe and secure environment for tourists and visitors. The province has experienced incidents of crime perpetrated against tourists. Such incidents create a negative perception and reputation about the EC as a tourism destination of choice.
Incidents of crime directed at tourists and tourism products necessitated the ECPTA to join forces with the Department of Tourism, South African Police Services, and other law enforcement agencies to conduct a Tourism Safety Awareness campaign.
The purpose of this joint initiative was to educate and raise awareness among motorists, tourists, passengers and visitors to be vigilant and stay safe during the Easter Weekend. Safety brochures were distributed. Law enforcement agencies conducted searches that fell within their jurisdiction for tourists’ safety and were well received by the public.
